Indie Series Awards History and Winners Archive

Founded by indie producer and We Love Soaps editorial director Roger Newcomb in 2009 to provide a showcase for the burgeoning genre, the Indie Series Awards celebrate the best in independently produced, scripted entertainment created for the Web.

The 1st Annual Indie Soap Awards--the official name of the event from 2009-2013, although it was commonly referred to as The ISAs--was a low-tech pre-recorded "ceremony" that aired online the evening of February 1, 2010 (ISA1). Many of the winners created brilliant accept speech videos while others pre-taped speeches and presentations at Shetler Studios in midtown Manhattan. 16 series received nominations.  The live social media buzz was strong, prompting producer Roger Newcomb to promise a live event the following year.

The 2nd Annual ISAs (ISA2) were announced on January 10, 2011, with a ceremony planned for February 21. Once again the indie soap community embraced the idea and the Awards were a smashing success. The event was held at Alvin Ailey Studios in New York.  Around 125 people attended the ceremony, hosted by Emmy winner Martha Byrne.

The 3rd Annual ISAs (ISA3) were presented on February 21 at New World Stages with over 250 attendees. For the first time, many of the awards were divided up into Drama and Comedy categories. Actress Colleen Zenk served as de facto host, opening the ceremony with an original song, and closing the show as the theater filled with bubbles.

The 4th Annual ISAs (ISA4) took place on February 19, 2013, once again at New World Stages in New York. The nonprofit Indie Series Network served as the charity sponsor. Colleen Zenk and Kevin Spirtas, who both landed on web series after attending ISA3, opened the ceremony following a "best of" montage video. Two former ISA winners, Martha Byrne and Hillary B. Smith, closed the show as the theater once again was filled with bubbles. The ceremony was live-streamed for the first time ever.

The 5th Annual Indie Series Awards (ISA5) ceremony was held on April 2, 2014 at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, hosted by Carolyn Hennesy. The event was presented by We Love Soaps LLC in partnership with the Indie Series Network. Roger Newcomb and Kevin Mulcahy Jr. once again produced the event, along with Susan Bernhardt, who was instrumental in bringing the ceremony to Los Angeles. The event was live-streamed by JTS.TV, who provided a strong support team led by Carter Mason.

The 6th Annual Indie Series Awards (ISA6) returned to the El Portal Theatre, hosted by Emmy winner Eric Martsolf.  Martsolf opened the show with a monologue that quickly turned into an epic musical performance of "Oh Indies!" (to the tune of Barry Manilow's"Mandy").  The ceremony was streamed live by WebVee Guide, in partnership with Happy Little Guillotine Studios. We Love Soaps LLC produced the event, along with Leonian Pictures. The Indie Series Network was once again the charity sponsor, while Serial Scoop became the media sponsor.

The 7th Annual Indie Series Awards ceremony once again was held at the El Portal, hosted by Eric Martsolf and his Days of our Lives co-star, Jen Lilley. The hosts performed "ULB" (to the tune of the Beatles "Let It Be"), along with a 10-person crowd made up of current and former nominees. AfterBuzz TV live-streamed the red carpet and the ceremony, as well as Winner's Circle interviews. We Love Soaps LLC and the Indie Series Network produced the event, along with Leonian Pictures.

The 8th Annual Indie Series Awards took place on April 5, 2017, at Colony Theatre in Burbank. The ceremony was hosted by EastSiders producers and stars John Halbach and Kit Williamson. The best comedy and drama categories were expanded from 6 nominees each to 8. All seven of the Best Original Song nominees were performed. The show was streamed on Facebook Live. We Love Soaps LLC, the Indie Series Network and Leonian Pictures produced the event.

THE ISA AWARD
2010: None
2011: In a playful nod to the origin of the art form we honored, each Indie Soap Award winner received a one-of-a-kind, 500g block of Savon de Marseille Bonne Mere from L'Occitane.
2012-13: So many series, so many stories; so many stars. What is it our winners have in common? They take ingredients available to everyone--anecdotes, friends, the Internet--and create original and lasting works of art.

Armando Ramirez fashioned each Indie Soap Award specifically for We Love Soaps, LLC by hand, from discarded car parts. Under his care, a spark plug, a potentiometer, and some nuts and bolts become beguiling, unique statuettes. Like our winning indie soaps, the Award itself is a testament to craftsmanship and whimsy, inspiration and perspiration, beauty and wit.

2014-present: A large octagon crystal award. The elegant design included the ISA logo, "Indie Series Awards", the winner's name, winning series and year.

ISA4 REVEAL: Support Favorite Soap & Indie Stars, Share Official Poster

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Official Poster of the 4th Annual Indie Soap Awards!

This poster belongs to anyone and everyone who helped create the series nominated this year for an Award, and everyone who enjoys their work! It's the banner under which all the visionaries and talents of this new era of independently produced and distributed television - TV that you just can't get on TV - march into the future of entertainment!

Feel free to share with all your friends, followers etc. to support your favorite ISA4 stars, like Cynthia Watros, Kevin Spirtas, Colleen Zenk, Signy Coleman, Martha Byrne, Yvonne Perry, Ellen Dolan, Vincent Pastore... and on and on! All those stars of "regular soaps" (they also star in indie soaps) will be celebrating the best of the genre one week from tonight, on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at New World Stages, near Times Square in New York City. Learn more (including how you might be able to join them!) here: http://isa.welovesoaps.com/p/registration.html.

Remember to use the hashtag #ISA4 on Twitter. This will be especially effective for those following the ceremony livestream. More details on that later.

Finally, a great big shout-out to pro artist superstar Craig Johnson II, who provided the concept and the awesome graphic translation of the ISA trophy statuette. Learn more about him here: http://craigj2.blogspot.com.
